Core Aeration is theprocess of using a large heavy machine with hollow tines to punch holes into your soil removing a plug of soil from the ground. My machine weighs 350 pounds. The weight is necessary to provide resistance so the tines will penetrate the soil. Most rental machines are not heavy enough and will bounce around on the tines causing the operator to get bounced around as well not to mention having to reserve the machine, go pick it up, and return it in time. The typical rental machine is very difficult to operate and rents for about $65 – $80 for the day.
So what is the benefit of Core Aeration? When these plug’s of soil are removed there are hundred’s or thousand’s of these small holes all over your lawn. These holes allow several things to occur.
1. Allows air or oxygen direct access to the roots.
2. Loosens soil to allow roots room to grow.
3. Creates space for water to collect at the root level.
4. Creates a space for Organic Compost to collect at the root level.
All of these combine to give your lawn’s root system the opportunity to develop and grow deeper, which in turn causes your grass to flourish, be healthy and more drought tolerant. The best defense from weeds and drought is a healthy lawn root system.
The typical lawn never gets Organic Compost or Core Aeration. Therefore it has a shallow root system and hard compacted soil. In this condition your Lawn has a hard time taking in water and nutrients.
After Core Aeration and Organic Compost your grass roots will start to grow deeper. With deeper roots your grass will thicken up and become more resilient, have a higher heat and drought tolerance, and retain water and nutrients. With thicker grass your lawn will require less water and no chemicals to control weeds. Allow your lawn to grow and set your mower to a high level to help it establish. Mowing to short reduces your lawns ability to protect itself and the soil below. A thick lawn shades itself and reduces moisture loss.
Core Aeration & Organic Composting is Absolutely Essential if you want a healthy, thick, green lawn that requires less water.
